Milwaukee, Wisconsin will always hold a place near and dear to my heart. My husband and I actually had grand plans to move out to the area long before we ever even thought of moving south to Tampa, Florida. Whenever we could get the chance we would head out to Milwaukee in hopes of discovering something new and exciting. There are so many fun things to do in Milwaukee WI. We’ve seen Modest Mouse perform at the Rave and my husband just ran in the Milwaukee marathon this past April… We even would drive around the local areas, such as ‘Tosa and West Allis talking about homes could imagine ourselves living in one day. We love Milwaukee. In a couple weekends, we will be driving out with my sister to celebrate her 21st birthday there!
One thing that I’ve always enjoyed about Milwaukee is that you get that fun city feel minus the ridiculous overcrowding of it’s bigger city counterparts (e.g., Chicago). It has your bars, multiple breweries, a distillery, coffee shops, a view of the water, AND cheese curds. What more could you want?
However, with all that Milwaukee has going for it, you might find it a bit difficult figuring out where to start first. That’s where I come in. Here is a list of my top 5 favorite places to hang out, eat, and drink in Milwaukee WI. This is by no means an extensive list and I can assure you there are LOTS of fun places to explore in MKE. Without further ado, my list of fun things to do in Milwaukee WI (for 21+ year olds).
Rochambo Coffee & Tea House
What it’s about: If you’re a lot about coffee or tea… but also a little bit about alcohol, this one’s for you. Most of the products offered are “ethically sourced, fairly traded, organic, pesticide free, non-GMO, and free of high fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors” as noted on their website. All the whipped cream they put on their drinks is hand whipped and oh so fluffy. So, if you’re about that, they’re about it too. Rochambo is housed in a cozy cafe on the East Side of Milwaukee and it is simply a fun little hang-out to check out. All I know is that I’m an avid coffee drinker and I’ve only ever been there on the weekends so I think you can guess how I take my coffee from there.
Why I like it: It’s colorful and cozy and I am ALL about that aesthetic. I’m personally also amazed by they concept of going somewhere where you can actually get an Irish Coffee and you’re not at Brunch. They also create so many fun, creative coffee and tea recipes that it’s difficulty to narrow it down to just one!
- Irish Coffee, duh… in any shape or form. 😉
- Chai Chata

Sip & Purr Cafe
What it’s about: If the name didn’t already tip you off… Sip & Purr is a cat cafe. They simply promote the three things in life that should make anyone happy, ” Eat. Drink. Pet Cats.”. While you can stop byto eat and have a cup of coffee like any cafe, what makes the Sip & Purr really fun is that you play with the cats (if that’s what is actually your cup of tea). For just $8.48, you can spend an hour in the Cat Lounge, which is a separate room from the cafe, surrounded by the friendliest felines. What’s even better is if you fall in love at first sight, you adopt that kitty to be your furrever friend.
Why I like it: CATS. COFFEE. COCKTAILS.
- French Pawlmer
- Punk Ass Cat – India Pale Ale
- Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart

What it’s about: Unlike the name suggests, the Lakefront Brewery is not exactly on the lake front, however, it does give way to great views of the Milwaukee river! Lakefront is one of over 30 breweries in Milwaukee (and on this list), but if you are a fan of beer, Milwaukee is the place to be. I’m personally not the biggest beer fan, but I know some of you will be and this is a great option to check out if you are! Naturally they provide access to a large variety of Milwaukee brewed beers and if you happen to be able to take a brewery tour you’ll be in good hands with Tour Guide Justin… He’s hilarious. 🙂
Why I like it: Now the truth is about to come out… their cheese curds are huge and delicious. Now come on, you can’t leave Wisconsin without eating any cheese curds. Who are you, a monster? (Or maybe lactose intolerant?)
- Fried Cheese Curd Basket
- Northwoods Salad
- Riverwest Stein

Red Lion Pub
What it’s about: If you’re looking for a pub feel like that of those ‘across the pond’, the Red Lion Pub boasts to have “a taste of Britain’s best cooking”. With access to a bar both upstairs and downstairs and equip with a rooftop seating area, the Red Lion Pub is a great place to hang out on a sunny afternoon for a couple pints.
Why I like it: The unique thing about the Red Lion Pub is their “soccer pool” area where you can set up an enlarged game of billiards with soccer balls. So get a group of friends together, pick teams, and get yourself moving.
- Chicken Cheddar Jalapeno Soup;
- Spotted Cow Cheese Curds (yes, eat more!)
- Classic Shepard’s Pie

What it’s about: Play hard, brunch hard.
Why I like it: Every time I’m in Milwaukee we have made it a point to try to make it to Blue’s Egg for brunch. Whenever I’m there I try something new on the menu and I’m NEVER disappointed. I’m sure you will feel the same way. In addition to their amazing brunch foods, they have all your classic brunch drinks (e.g., mimosas & bloodys), but they also have a few other great beverages to test out as well.
- Blue’s Bloody Mary
- Four Roses Chai (alcoholic)
- Blue’s Classic Benedict
- Browns ‘n’ Cheddar

- Great Lakes Distillery
- Milwaukee Brewing Co.
