Some say “a picture is worth a thousand words”, but in today’s fast paced world of social media, a picture or video can go even further now than ever before. Having access to digital pictures and videos of your experiences around the world is truly a gift that keeps on giving. There is so much technology for travel that is available out there, but today I will be focusing on what I consider the best digital camera for travel: the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II. Before you head out on your next adventure, why not learn a bit more about the cool technology for travel that you can use to commemorate your travels for a lifetime?
Back in 2018, right before my husband and I went on our honeymoon to the UK and Ireland, I got the sudden urge to be a travel vlogger. It had been years since I owned my own dedicated digital camera. I’m talking I probably saved up all my pennies and nickles to buy something like a Nikon Coolpix back when I was in middle school… the quality was terrible. Or maybe I was just a terrible photographer… either way I think I ended up with some “decent” MySpace pictures.
Anyway, I HAD to be a travel vlogger, so I started to do my research. Naturally, a DSLR looked like it was the top of the line way to go. However, that would have been way too much of an investment at the time considering my videography skills would be amateur at best. I needed a camera that was going to be user-friendly, but versatile enough to grow with me as I learned new skills. Read on to find out why I consider this camera to be essential technology for travel.
Light & Portable.
I think this is pretty self-explanatory, but one of the great things about this camera is that you pretty much can take it anywhere with ease. It is small enough to fit in your purse or maybe even some pockets. I purchased a cute floral camera strap and wore it around my neck easily throughout the majority of our travels.
Vlog Your Heart Out.
A huge selling point of this camera is its flexible LCD screen which has the ability to flip around so that you can actually see yourself while filming. This is a huge selling point if you plan on vlogging on the go and want to know if you’re actually in frame once you hit record. Techradar.com voted it to be #1 in their top 10 list of the best vlogging cameras of 2019. It also serves as a bonus when you are setting up shots of yourself on a tripod and need to run to get into position for the shot. 🙂
Watch the World at High-Speeds.
My second favorite feature is the time-lapse settings. I’ve been able to add some fun shots to my vlogs by adding in the small variation of speed that a time lapse brings. There’s something so fun about seeing people dart past or watching the sun move at record speeds. There is still much I would like to explore with this feature, such as, time lapses while driving.
Plenty of Bang for Your Buck.
Now, I’m not a tech wiz when it comes to cameras, but I know that this one worked great for me as a total amateur. Based off of many reviews, this camera will get the job done, and then some. With an average price of about $600, I felt like I was paying for a quality product that not only had great reviews, but was going to be user-friendly and versatile.
Some basic specs:
- Screen Size: 3 in.
- Item Weight: 1.4 lbs.
- Item Dimensions: 1.65 x 2.4 x 4.15 in.
Overall, I would say that I have been really pleased with the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II. I have already used it to make various videos documenting camping trips, my husband’s marathons, and international trips around the world. I can’t wait to take it with us to the Philippines this summer and see what I can capture next!
Other than a go-to camera, what other technology for travel do you consider essential for your trips?
